Implementation and Testing

12. Testing and QA

  • Cross-Script Testing: Test with a wide variety of scripts, including edge cases like combining marks and rare glyphs.
  • Bidirectional Scripts: Test interactions with mixed LTR/RTL content.
  • Locale-Specific Testing: Validate content display, input, and interaction for each target script and locale.

Testing and Debugging

Actionable Considerations:

  • Cross-Browser Testing: Verify font rendering in major browsers (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).
  • Device Testing: Check font appearance on various devices, including smartphones, tablets, and desktops.
  • Language-Specific Testing: Use sample text in the target language to validate proper rendering of all glyphs.
  • Test for missing glyphs: A font may support some but not all glyphs in a script, leading to rendering issues such as missing characters or boxes ().

  • Check for inconsistent appearance of fallback fonts: Fallback fonts can cause noticeable changes in size, weight, or line height, disrupting the design.

Implementation Details:

  • Use tools like Font Squirrel, Webfont Generator, or browser developer tools to inspect font properties and rendering.
  • Simulate slow networks to test font loading behavior and fallback scenarios.

Common Pitfalls:

  • Browser Inconsistencies: Some browsers handle font smoothing, hinting, or kerning differently.
  • Oversights in Testing: Failure to test fallback stacks or rare glyphs can lead to missed issues in production.
